Training & Competition

Beginning at the age of 8, athletes of all skill levels have the opportunity to participate and succeed in the Tuttle School Special Olympics Program.

We offer three levels of training and competition:

  • Individual Skills focus on developmental sports training and activities. This level of competition is best suited for our younger athletes, those who are new to sports, and those who require a higher level of physical and instructional support from coaches, individual skills, team skills, and team competitions. Athlete ability levels are carefully assessed before the athlete is placed in the appropriate competition level.
  • Team Skills, offered for basketball athletes, is an intermediate level of competition for those who have mastered individual skills but are not yet ready to participate at the team level. Both individual and team skills athletes compete with other athletes from the Greater Houston Area.
  • Team Sports competitions are offered to Upper Tuttle School athletes participating in softball and/or basketball. Athletes participating in Team Sports are those who are able to understand and follow the rules of the game. Team Sports athletes demonstrate the ability to play at a higher level of skill and competition. Playing on one of our teams requires an additional time commitment, as the games are played on evenings and weekends. Our teams play against other Special Olympics athletes at local, area, and state competitions.

"My coaching philosophy for Tuttle athletes is to work hard, try their best, and work as a team. Win or lose, if they do all of these things, they have accomplished more than what I could ask for."
